Longji Rice Terraces

The name Longji Rice Terraces refer to the rice terraces developed on Longji Mountain, Longsheng County, about 100 km (62 miles) northwest from Guilin City. There are terraces in quite some places in China, but it is rare to see such a large-scale concentration as Longji Rice Terraces. It is located in Longji Mountain, Longji Town, 12 kilometers (7 miles) away from the town seat. The scenery is beautiful and picturesque. The dragon ridge terraces are orderly and colorful in lines. The shapes of the lines are mainly curving, which endow people with a kind of dynamic beauty. In particular, the long curves and wavy lines remind people that these terraces are like streamers falling from the sky.

There are two ethnic groups, Zhuang and Yao, living in this area. And it was also these two peoples who created and developed the rice terraces from the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368 AD). In their villages, you can see the traditional Zhuang & Yao folk handcrafts and colorful costumes, hear beautiful folk songs, enjoy the original and traditional customs. All these, together with mountains, forests and sea of clouds, constitute the profound cultural connotation of Longji area. Looking from the top of the terraces, you can only feel that the stacked terraces under your feet rise like the tide, surging forward with the momentum of overwhelming mountains and rivers, forming a group of open and close terraces, forming a world of bold focus and beauty, presenting a kind of rugged beauty and shocking.

The terraces are located between villages, or that is to say, the villages are surrounded by these rice terraces. There are always mountain trails connecting different villages and rice terraces. Hence, hiking is an ideal way to tour this area.
